It's time to answer the question that people ask the absolute most when starting a podcast, what equipment do I use? Welcome to Geelong podcasters. If you're down our way at the end of the month, why not come to one of our free monthly meetup events and also find the booking links and more in the show notes. This podcast episode is part of a longer series that we're starting about podcast starter questions, essentially. So what I wanted to get to you about today is, What equipment do you need to start a podcast? Ultimately, and I know this is going to sound annoying for those of you who have invested in microphones, in headphones, in maybe software or really expensive equipment, ultimately, all you need is a mobile phone and a doona cover to get us to get a podcast started. In all respects, you need something to be able to record your audio, something that you can use to like see that you're actually recording headphones would be helpful, but we're talking about bare minimums here, and a donna cover to be able to reduce any outside sounds, and that's it. You need just something really basic to get started when recording a podcast. Now, of course, for those of us who maybe want to up our game a little bit, maybe turn this hobby into something a little bit more professional, or we want to just get, ultimately, better equipment or better quality out of our microphones, or our equipment, as is, ultimately the three things that you will need when creating a podcast. We're specifically talking about an audio podcast here, you need a microphone, a pair of headphones and recording software. Now that is your bare basics. You can obviously go a lot higher, a lot more expensive, and a lot more in depth. That's not what we're starting here today. Today is a starting podcast. You know, to get yourself started on podcasting. So when it comes to microphones. Essentially, you want something that is decent budget that is made within the past five to six years, realistically, and gives you clear audio quality. That's ultimately what you want to what you wanted to do at the end of the day. Now, of course, ways you can improve that would be to improve your surroundings, maybe by again, putting a doona cover over your microphone, or making sure you're in a plush, soft environment that can help boost your microphone quality without having to upgrade your microphone intently. A good microphone to choose, usually would be something like a Blue Yeti. It is not the best out there, but it's a good starting microphone, and the reason I recommend it is because it's USB. You can plug it straight into your computer, no if hands or butts. A toddler can do it. Toddler can get started. The next thing that you were to purchase is headphones. Now I highly recommend getting some headphones that are over ear headphones. So we're talking the headphones that have a band that goes across the crown of the head and have very large cups for your ears, and if you've seen them, you've seen them. And essentially, this will allow you to block out any sound that's going on on outside, so then you're able to better hear the quality of the sound coming out of your microphone, and also your ability to edit in this next stage. And this next stage being recording software, and this is where you've got useful tools such as audacity, which is an open source software, or if you're using a Mac, something like garage brand, which allows you just again, to plug in your microphone, select that you're recording it, press big red record button and get going. Of course, you are going to take multiple attempts of recording and listening to your voice for the first time is going to hurt, because remember, what we hear is not what everyone else hears when it comes to our voice, and that is okay. Take, for example, my breathing. I feel like it is very obvious, but everyone else doesn't seem to mind. But back to the question at hand. Zoe, if you are listening to this in real time, we have our second event happening at Cafe Go in Geelong and the Geelong CBD. And if you have missed it, that is okay. We hold an event every fourth Friday of the month. Look forward to seeing you there. We're building a very nice little community here. So if we can meet you in person, that is great. And if we can't, and if you are unavailable to see me or see us in person, I should say, and why not reach out? And I will set up a virtual event sometime in the future, maybe later on this year. But ultimately, those are the three things that you need. And as I said, you could start something as simple as a microphone and a donna cover. And then from there, you can graduate into more and more equipment, making sure that you actually invest the time to research what is best for you and your needs. If you're going to do an interview style podcast, you're going to need more equipment. You. This podcast is sponsored by me, Zoe.
