025 Add a Little Chaos (Strategically)
We explore how a sprinkle of silliness and the "Yes, and" improv principle can supercharge your brand and business conversations.
Quirky Quiz Time 🥳
What does the "Yes, and" principle help you do in business conversations?
A) Build upon existing thoughts and foster collaboration
B) Reject unhelpful ideas quickly
C) Avoid making any decisions
-
Correct Answer: A) Build upon existing thoughts and foster collaboration - it’s always better to build than to crush 😁
Add a Little Chaos (Strategically)
Dive into the powerful impact of embracing playful professionalism in your branding, marketing, and client conversations using the classic improv technique “Yes, and.” Whether you're navigating the drama of content creation or building trust with your audience, we explore how a dash of humour and a solid strategy can make your personal brand unforgettable.
Improv isn’t just for theatre kids. Using “Yes, and” in your business can completely shift how you collaborate with clients, brainstorm ideas, and create engaging content. Instead of shutting ideas down (and faces with them), this method helps you build on what’s already there, keeping creativity flowing and clients feeling heard.
The episode stresses that letting your freak flag fly—even just a little—can help your brand stand out. You don’t need to be the next stand-up star, but adding puns, playful language, or even a blooper reel shows your audience you’re a human, not a sales robot. And trust me, humans buy from humans, not perfectly polished perfection.
If you’ve been feeling stuck in a beige branding loop, this is your sign to shake things up. Try the “Yes, and” approach in your next meeting or social post and see how it opens doors. And if you want help bringing more play into your personal brand, reach out and work with Zoë Wood of the Video Confidence Coach—we’ll help you build a brand that’s both powerful and a bit fun.

Thank you for all your comments
at any given time
and nobody knows what it's doing
all in itself
because unfortunately it's a beast
is going to do
based entirely on what the algorithm
of creating content or videos
that you don't dictate your actions
I highly recommend
at any different time
favours a lot of things
and the algorithm
because people are willing to support other people
and in a nice way of course
on what you can improve
maybe just to get some feedback
to other groups that you're a part of
or you share the video
like us here
with the community
make sure that you share it
and then once you put that video out there
before you put anything out there
maybe you'll film a different couple of videos
practice a couple of times
then do it
about having your face out there
and you're confident
onto camera
so if you are able to get your face
but I digress
wants us to do
or whatever the social media overlords
and the actions
is based on our actions
and especially the algorithm
and on social media that
and what they're about
and we like to see what they look like
we like to see other faces
because humans like to connect with faces
and yes that is definitely true
on many socials favours faces
So you've heard that the algorithm
the Unboring Your Brand podcast
on the next episode of
but I look forward to seeing you
at the end of the day
of course it's entirely up to your confidence
and see what magic unfolds
you can always try it with your barista
and if you want to
to work together
but you can definitely build upon things
going with the agreeing side of things
now of course that is
and yes and
well we can have both
well I feel like tacos
so I feel like sushi
say I feel like this
maybe thinking about what's for dinner
and maybe if even in your personal life
as opposed to yes but
where you'd use yes and
try a brainstorm
So in your next meeting
not tear it down.
you are trying to build it
be it a solution to their problem
be it a life
be it a conversation
you are trying to build something together
when you're working with your friends
when you're working with your family
because when you are working with your clients
instead of building against them
and building with people
staying curious
it means staying open
let me do that one again though
except
and building with people
staying curious
It means staying open
as opposed to a negative way.
but you're doing it in an additive way
or they didn't realise
that maybe they did not consider
to make sure that you cover those bases
but you can also use that yes and
doesn't necessarily mean that you agree
and just because you're building upon it
what the foundation that they've built upon
you're acknowledging what they've said
it's almost like saying yes but
that just because you're saying yes and
I want to stress
agreeing with everything
Yes anding doesn't mean
just imagine you said something there.
If you didn't say anything there
yes very good.
So you need to yes and
you need to do it anyway.
and to do that
and hear what you have to say
people need to understand
because people need to hear your message
However you intend to market yourself
in your business.
in your personal brand
putting yourself out there
when it comes to
And sometimes that's just what happens
and I'm going to do it anyway.
I'm going to receive
or what backlash
how this will turn out
Yes I'm worried about
and I'm going to do it anyway.
Yes I might be nervous
being crippled by self-doubt.
who find themselves
and my potential clients
for those of my clients
So it is also especially useful
that's not there.
you can't build on something
something that is already pre-existing
You can build upon
that is completely dismissed.
is still better than something
that isn't perfect
you can even an even better idea
as I've just discussed
and again build upon
to open up the conversation
but yes and allows you
yes but
and just smacking you down
hi I'm using my hand
the podcast on that YouTube
for those who aren't watching
yes but
as opposed to yes but
because you are yes anding
and build upon
and then formulate a response
after someone has said something
you are allowed to take a pause
before responding
You can start by actually listening
my sincere apologies.
so if I hit the microphone
I'm using my hands a lot today
and professional life?
in both business
for saying yes anding like a pro
So what are my go-to tips
can give you.
that life and the universe
to the possibilities
a little bit more open
and also allow you to be
will stop killing those harsh vibes
in your personal life
in your regular speak
but building that momentum
all of the time
we aren't able to do this
and of course
definitely changes that style for you
to the and factor
from the but factor
because moving away
where I'm coming from that
but you can understand
I don't know if that's possible
will love you more
or family member
or your loved one
maybe your partner
and hopefully
you'll become a better communicator
So in that
they've already laid.
build upon that foundation
to make sure that you're able to
and already brought to the table
that they've already said
you're incorporating the stuff
because when you are yes anding
and pretend like none of us have done that
I'm gonna nod in my head
so you can start speaking.
to stop speaking
that you're not just waiting for them
because you're trying to make sure
well just full stop
and a better communicator
and makes you a better listener
for you in your personal life
what yes anding can possibly do
you're allowed to explore
two or three things together
or you're allowed to choose
you're allowed to make dinner
you're an adult
to choosing dinner
or when it even has come time
with family, friends, flatmates
that you may be having
or with any dramas
This also helps with relationships
and your professional life.
with both your personal
as you can imagine
and especially because it's all connected
So when it comes to yes anding
It's almost like I'm human too.
outside of just business.
being able to explore opportunities
look at me Zoe
you can also use and but
When it comes to your personal life too
especially in creative fields.
automatically shooting their ideas down
because we're not
but also allow people to trust us more
to bring people on board
because yes we are yes anding
with your budget
here is what we can achieve
out of what we talked about
here is what we can do
but in a yes and
not in a yes but way
there I did again
but not in a
lay out the facts
and then be able to
exploration and more innovation
and invites the expansion
You're allowed to say yes and
but they don't have the budget for it.
where they're asking for the world
or for example you're in something
and fast industry
if you are in a very hard
Now say for example
or the way that you talk to clients.
within the way that you speak
to start recognizing that
and I implore you
Now I ask you
back to the real world.
because you need to bring things
You say yes, yes, yes but
in people's vocabulary.
Now of course this comes
when you are saying but.
That is very much what it feels like
I'm gonna leave.
no thank you ma'am
I agree with you up and to a point bam
There is a very clear
I agree with you.
There is a very clear
and slapping you across the face.
just someone coming
like in a nice suit
in a polite outfit
it very much sounds like a rejection
But with that
mainly just because I want to say but.
now I'm putting emphasis on that but there
with yes, but
Now as you can imagine
Yes, but.
and yes but.
between yes anding
So let's go through the big differences
in your brand.
all the things that you talk about
especially when it comes to the way
and also stop your railroad thinking
may be useful for you
to explore the other options
using the yes and in principle
in the past regarding your brand
and things that you've already had
especially concrete ideas
to be able to build upon
using that yes and in principle
Whenever you're doing social media
every single week, month, week, fortnight.
you're pulling teeth
that doesn't feel like
social media content planning
is utilizing yes and in
that you can do on the day-to-day
And another thing
that we can do within your budget.
to something
but we're going to bring it back
you know expensive idea
okay, we can have that
running them in being like
then you can start
and professional that you are
as the expert
and then once it gets to a reasonable level
and explore their ideas
but let them explore their thoughts
to rein them in a bit
and sometimes you might need
is what I like to say
very big for their budgets
where some clients can feel
there's a couple of times
we'll give you a discretion here,
and especially
when it comes to certain clients
Now of course,
immediately pooping the ideas.
or I don't think we can do that
I don't think that will work
Instead of defaulting to,
that I had before.
very much like the example
where you explore ideas together
yes and in client calls
You can also use
to brain storm.
of a brainstorming session
The idea is that's the point
even if it sounds crazy.
their thoughts and ideas
No one is scared to give
when no one is scared to speak up.
are things like brain storming sessions
yes and for in every day
and what you can use
but what you can do
is it may not happen every single day
that example that I just showed you
now of course,
And when it comes to,
and it was all fine.
we ended up working together
and then in the end of the day,
to be able to get my coin across
by using yes and
but transform them in a different way
that she had already poo-pooed
incorporating the ideas
to the point where I could start
or the idea that she had laid out
and from that situation
and then I was able to yes
get a bit more of a foundation
we were able to talk,
I was able to,
And then from there,
What do you want to replicate?
What have you seen?
What are you, what is your idea?
in how this works.
So you're clearly not interested
like my first two dot points.
so none of them are getting past
None of the ideas,
that something's going on.
it's very clear
and I said, okay,
So I stopped the conversation
okay, I need to stop this.
of ideas and I'm like,
where I was getting to my last couple
to the point
she kept shooting it down
Every single idea I had,
And she just kept shooting down.
to their problem.
showcase the solution
and what they ultimately
in front of them and their market
to then be able to stand out
what they don't expect
But also more importantly,
and what they expect.
of what they want
to get a really clear idea
into her customer target market
I did a very in-depth research
that you're targeting.
Here are the people
to stand out from them.
Here's what you need to do differently
industry fellows are doing.
these are what your, you know,
I'm bringing her, you know,
bringing her research,
And especially when I am
around for you.
to magically turn things
especially someone who you've just met
But you can't expect someone,
and video marketing coach.
and I am a personal branding
in the marketing space
Yes, I am a professional
in your head.
just because you've had them
come to reality
I'm not here to make your thoughts
I'm not one of those mesmerists.
I am not a magician.
And I'm not a genie.
that I thought an idea in her head.
to see if I could vocalize
that she was more testing me
And I later found out
idea in her head.
that she had a very distinct
But she also know
Thank you so much for that.
Thank you.
Awesome. Cool.
to work with me.
She knew that she wanted
and pitching ideas.
is we were brainstorming
and essentially what we were doing
onto her industry and target market
And I had done a lot of research
all that good stuff.
I traveled all the way there,
have a sit-down meeting.
before we agreed to say
of who I was talking with
where I got a better idea
I did my 15-minute conversations
and these were before
Now, this was before I did my discovery forms
and we were having a sit-down meeting.
for say 10 to 15 minutes previous to this
And we'd talked maybe once or twice
Yes, a couple of years ago now.
couple of years ago now.
I was working with a woman
So, say for example,
I highly recommend.
to shut off ideas immediately,
who are very quick
especially for people
being able to use this yes anding,
especially in creative fields,
And if you work with clients quite heavily,
to keep showing up creatively.
gives them the confidence
or even in just like the people around you
and your team, if you have one,
this builds confidence in yourself
So, when it comes to yes anding,
that have to do with business terms.
or other things
which will then lead into money
or generate leads,
to help you generate money
at a moment's notice
that you can start running with
easy, and quick for you to make
which is something that is cheap,
a minimum viable product,
as I like to call it,
give you an idea or an MVP,
And even if it's not fully baked,
allows you to expand your thoughts.
using the yes and principle
If you're feeling stuck,
or even just an area in your business.
like marketing query or problem
about some sort of
you're having a conversation with yourself
Even if you're just doing it with yourself,
with whoever you're talking with.
It encourages collaboration
Yes, anding stops idea-killing in its tracks.
Make sure you have your ABN registered.
Thank you, thank you.
So, welcome on board.
at the end of the day.
but you're also a business owner
and you may be a contractor,
You are a business owner
or your time or your hours for money.
your knowledge, or your work
because you are giving your experience,
you are a business owner
At the end of the day,
I'm talking to my personal brand builders.
Now, of course,
a game changer in a business?
So, why is yes anding
so you can get back to the goal at hand.
and loop it back around
you can yes and it
it's not getting to where I want,
and you think,
And, you know, if you're given enough time
just to see where the situation goes.
you're allowed to use the yes and approach
within your business,
or the problem that you're experiencing
that you're having
the exact solution to the situation
and may not seem like
Even the ones that are a bit weird
It keeps conversations open, playful, and productive.
to help you out.
or anyone that you're bringing into your team
and with any contractors
but also with staff
not just with potential clients
not just with your clients,
This helps conversations
at the first opportunity.
and not just stomped out
need to be fostered and grown upon
it means that building ideas
But in business,
but cold calling is not my thing.
I love you and I thank you
that are definitely not going to work now.
There is things that worked in the past
and constantly evolving.
but things are constantly changing
in their particular industry and niche
may have a lot of experience
Yes, some of my older, hey, my older clients
at every single moment.
to be able to know exactly what to do
a thousand lives as being a business owner
because none of us have lived
by the seat of our pants
We are all just holding on
We are all faking this.
have to do with business?
Now, what does improv in the theater world
You say yes and you add on top of it.
You don't dismiss it outright.
or what you are walking into.
that is happening in front of you
You don't dismiss what is the scenario
and then add to it.
is you accept what is offered
when it comes to classic improv
and the one rule
or another couple of other people
usually with another person
a scene, a conversation,
where you improvish, improvish, improvationalize
So what improv is, is theater exercises
So just yes and in italics.
So I'm going to tell you what yes and is.
Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
but I'm going to bring you in now.
Congratulations on avoiding this,
I tip my hat off for you.
of being in any sort of improv situation,
So for those who may not have the pleasure
So, drum roll please.
I know.
it's time to get friendly with yes and
or being pitched by you,
and doesn't make people hate meetings
creates cool stuff
or build a brand that thrives,
But if you want to build a small business
just quicker than a knock off on Friday.

there's a lot of stop fast,

The best way to put it

How improv rules can stop you
then it's okay to make mistakes.
and do not harm anyone else,
don't harm yourself
that ultimately at the end of the day
is that if you're willing to make mistakes,
and the message that I put out there
but hopefully the work
you're going to make pitfalls,
you're going to make mistakes,
your business in general,
is because when it comes to marketing
The reason I ask that
No.
that what you do now is perfect?
Can anyone argue
No.
was it absolutely perfect?
that you ever did for your business,
that you ever serviced,
The first thing that you ever created,
Did you not make mistakes?
Straight away?
were you crack hot?

it needs to be a little bit looser
that's going to be with you for life,
So if it's going to be something
a long-term personal brand.
it's gonna be a long life,
that I work with,
especially for a lot of the people
Why be building a personal brand,
because that's the real crime.
is that you just don't be boring
All I ask
because you are definitely smart.
so I'm gonna laugh
and I didn't get it
because you made a funny heart
I'm gonna be impressed
Even if I don't get it,
about your area of expertise.
and consistently tell a joke
by being able to tell a joke
I'd say you look smarter
Arguably,
professional and playful.
and silly,
You're allowed to be smart
so then people can tell it's joke.
Maybe you put it in italics
a little joke in there or two.
you're allowed to have
Even in some of your articles,
however you like to express yourself.
gifs,
videos,
in some of your reels,
wear a funny hat
Add a pun, add a blooper,

for joining us for 69 episodes
Thank you everyone
why not try it?
As that opportunity to,
69 baby, nice!
Take this episode,
because we're all gonna die someday.
to loosen up a little bit
So he's been waiting for a sign
that you communicate in general.
but in the way
that you market
not just in the way
with yourself and your brand,
You're allowed to have fun
with a funny gif.
Good week of work, guys,
saying, thanks for a good week.
at the end of a Friday
to your fellow staff
send a Slack message
you know,
that you're allowed to,
and that push
to just give you that momentum
But I want to take this opportunity
from my experience.
and in personal branding
when it comes to marketing
which happens a lot
I've been talking very theoretical,
Now, of course,
and of course, buy from you.
you remind them that you exist
And in turn will remember
your audience loves.
it might be the exact thing
it might be the thing that you're,
like that might be a bit too silly,
And even if you feel
You're allowed to let it show.
like the rest of us, I must say.
a little bit of a weirdo
But you are allowed to be
You don't have to do that.
or stripped from other properties.
from other channels
or funny jokes
are mainly just reposting memes
that grow rapidly
well, a lot of channels
Like a lot of,
a mean machine.
You don't have to be
a little bit of a dork.
You're allowed to be
you take that.
So you take that,
that I would like to give you.
permission slip
and you'll see a nice big
You'll find a link
So go down in the description.
I want to give you a permission slip.
Building a brand.
Ta-da!
you can build upon it.
And if they do work,
you're allowed to put them back.
And if they don't work,
and you're allowed to try things out.
You're allowed to do fun things
You're allowed to have fun.
that just because everything's serious.
And again, I'm not saying
that you're doing.
to bring to the work
It's just something light
look unprofessional.
It's nothing that makes them
Again, it's nothing small.
Give yourself a thumbs up.
You have found such and such.
to the end of this report.
you've gone all the way
But they say, congratulations,
the little guy.
what they've actually called
I've forgotten
I think Chibi or I think,
I don't exactly know his name,
that say, hey, you found,
and some of their reports
of their email newsletter
that they put at the bottom
but they have a little mascot
serious lines of work,
who are in various
a couple of my clients
I've been noticing
treasure hunt, for example.
or even just a little
You have a little funny
out into the world.
that you are promoting yourself
that you write anyway
or where are the articles
in the reports that you provide
Having some levity
relating to what you do.
or a meme, something funny
newsletter, maybe have a little gif
Maybe at the end of your email
on your social media.
once a month
to maybe post a meme
But you're allowed to take the time
look unprofessional.
how it may make you
because you're worried about
you know, cracking a joke
that may not be, for example,
And that may in turn,
with your brand.
You are allowed to have fun
and run from Boulder.
that you have to steal from
at the top of a pyramid
It's not a gold obelisk
thing that's set in stone.
a little bit, because it's not a
play with your brand
But you're allowed to
a laugh out loud funny ha ha.
It doesn't even have to be
a funny joke at the end.
and then have it be
to focus your brand on
whatever you like
30 seconds is going to be about
do a funny skit.
hey, I'm just going to
But even just thinking,
can be scary for the first time.
trying anything new
Now, of course,
if you do not want it to be.
It doesn't have to be scary
Doesn't have to be a chore.
marketing yourself and your business.
but you're allowed to enjoy
I know that's a shocker,
making content.
You're allowed to have fun
and then completely walk a back.
You can always make a joke
you can always walk a back.
is rearing its ugly head,
again, unprofessionalism
or you're scared to,
that type of person
And even if you aren't
like being smile.
like being ha ha,
like cracking a joke,
some human aspect to it,
And that usually involves
is going to stand out.
So if anything is authentic,
consistently pushed down our throats.
and is going to be
all over the world
There's going to be cropping up
Unauthenticity.
I think that's the right word.
in or unauthenticity.
there is going to be more
and actually see if this is the case,
again, we'll only be able to look back
Because as we move into this AI age,
It's about being seen as a human being.
enough to be trusted.
But it's not even just about being liked
and buy from you.
they are more likely to trust you
or when you meet them in person,
through their phones,
they just smile a little bit
and even if they don't laugh,
So if your audience actually laughs,
especially people who have money.
